The Border Collie Club has been training flyball for over a decade.  The equipment has changed, the training methods have changed but the dogs enthusiasm for the game has always remained the same!

In 1991 the Border Collie Club fielded it's first competitive flyball team:  The Valley Jets.  Twelve years later, a very enthusiastic group of flyballers re-established the Border Collie Club team under the name Quick Release.

Depending on interest, the OVBCC hosts flyball training nights during the summer time.  Handlers are then encouraged to find one of the many local teams to join if they would like to compete.

With the old Flyball box (or trap), the dog had to push a pedal with it's paw and then wait for the ball to fly through the air while the dog waited to catch it.
Needless to say, the old box wasn't really dog friendly...

Flyball boxes and the style of training have changed dramatically in the past decade.  The boxes have become larger and the ball is fired out by an internal mechanism which is much less likely to injure the dog.
Training methods have also changed drastically.  Dogs are encouraged to not come to a dead stop at the box and press the pedal with a paw.  They are taught to jump on the box with all four paws and push off in what is called a swimmer's turn.  This method is much kinder on the dogs joints, especially the shoulders.

The Border Collie puts on several demonstrations a year and flyball is definitely a crowd favorite!
Watch for our flyball demos at the Central Experimental Farm's Sheep Shearing Festival in May.

Summer 2003

We encourage members to come out and join the flyball fun on training nights during the summer.  We do however insist that dogs be kept under control and on leash until they have proven themselves reliable amongst all the 'Flyball Chaos'.
